In class
On your own. One device each. Choose First steps: twelve teaching cards, from two halves to two vessels with twelfths.

A ten-minute starter

  1. Show about 2 minDraw a bar for one whole. Show that 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4 fills it exactly, and that a piece marked 2/4 takes the same space as 1/2.
  2. Play about 6 minStudents choose First steps and work through the teaching cards. Fast finishers try Starter: halves and quarters.
  3. Talk about 2 minAsk for two different ways to fill the same vessel. Any way that makes every vessel exact is right.

Questions to ask the class

  1. Is a 2/4 piece bigger than a 1/2 piece?Listen for: No. They fill the same space.
  2. A vessel needs 3/4 and holds 1/2. How much more does it need?Listen for: 1/4.
  3. Do you have to use every piece?Listen for: No. Many cards have extra pieces that stay on the bench.

A common mistake

Trying to use every piece on the bench.

How to help: The card is solved when every vessel is exactly full. A hint says how much a vessel still needs, or how far it is over.

Assign it

On the coach dashboard, choose your class under Cohorts. In Assign practice, pick Fraction Forge and the drill First steps or Exact fill, add a due date if you want one, then press Assign. Students find it on their Train page.

Set First steps for a new class, then Exact fill.

Results show on the dashboard by student and by game once the server has checked them.

Students open Play, then Fraction Forge, then On your own.
