In class
On your own. One device each. Choose First steps: four lessons, from a square made of two pieces to the big square from all seven.

A ten-minute starter

  1. Show about 2 minShow the seven pieces: 2 large triangles, 1 medium triangle, 1 square, 1 parallelogram and 2 small triangles. Pieces turn in steps of 45°, and only the parallelogram can be flipped.
  2. Play about 6 minStudents choose First steps and work through the four lessons. Fast finishers try Lower Division shapes.
  3. Talk about 2 minA large triangle is a quarter of the big square. Ask: what share is each other piece?

Questions to ask the class

  1. How many small triangles match the square piece?Listen for: Two: each is half its area.
  2. Why does only the parallelogram need flipping?Listen for: The other pieces look the same flipped over.
  3. Do the seven shares add up to one whole?Listen for: Yes: ¼ + ¼ + ⅛ + ⅛ + ⅛ + 1/16 + 1/16 = 1.

A common mistake

Leaving the two large triangles until last, when there is no room for them.

How to help: Place the large triangles first: together they are half the whole. A hint shows the outline of one piece and says where it goes.

Assign it

On the coach dashboard, choose your class under Cohorts. In Assign practice, pick Seven Pieces and the drill First steps or Make the silhouette, add a due date if you want one, then press Assign. Students find it on their Train page.

Set First steps for a new class, then Make the silhouette.

Results show on the dashboard by student and by game once the server has checked them.

Students open Play, then Seven Pieces, then On your own.
